How Do Invisible Invisalign Braces Work?

There are many different types of orthodontic appliances which can be used to help move teeth. Some of these are "fixed" or glued to the teeth and some are removable. Both types of appliances place pressure on the teeth and jaws to effect significant tooth movement over time. The type and severity of the orthodontic problem will determine which orthodontic appliance is chosen by your orthodontist.

Removable appliances include:

  • Invisible (clear) orthodontic appliances, which are a state of the art alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth. No only are the aligners invisible, they are removable so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Brushing and flossing are easier and there are no rough metal pieces or wires to cause mouth sores during treatment.

  • Space maintainers, which hold spaces created by missing teeth or early tooth exfoliation/extraction while the adult teeth erupt
  • Growth appliances, which help to redirect growth and improve facial balance
  • Palatal expanders, which widen the upper arch and increase space for the eruption of the adult teeth. They also correct crossbites.
  • Removable retainers, which can either align teeth or hold teeth straight after braces
  • Headgear, which can move teeth or control jaw growth

Fixed appliances include:

  • Traditional Metal Braces which are the most common fixed appliances used in Orthodontics. Brackets are adhered to the teeth and wires are passed through them to apply pressure for tooth movement. Dr. Gaik primarily uses the SPEED appliance, which is smaller than most braces used in the past.
  • Ceramic Braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible than metal braces. While ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal braces, they are generally larger and require more attention to oral hygiene as they often stain from different foods. We generally use ceramic braces for cosmetic concerns on the upper front teeth.
  • Specialized, custom-made fixed appliances can be used to control habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting
  • Fixed space maintainers and space regainers are used when a baby tooth is lost prematurely to hold or open space until the permanent tooth erupts.
