Brushing is very important when you are wearing braces. Braces trap food and bacteria which promotes plaque formation. Plaque can lead to staining of the teeth, tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.

The foundation of good oral hygiene is effective brushing. This is done with a fluoridated tooth paste and a soft bristled toothbrush. You can use any brand of toothbrush you like. We have provided you with one in your kit, but if you have a favorite brand, there is no need to change the type of brush you use. Change your toothbrush often, no less than every three months. It is OK to use an electric toothbrush. Just remember that the brush heads need to be changed frequently and that a worn out head is ineffective and will not remove plaque properly.

Brushing should be done after every meal and snack and should be done slowly and carefully. It is important to brush above and below the braces as well as both the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of the teeth.

A proxabrush has been provided in your kit as well. This will aid in removing plaque and food from underneath the wire between your teeth. Always remember to push the food and bacteria away from your gums.

Flossing with braces is difficult, but it should be done at least once a day. A floss threader has been provided in your kit and is very helpful in getting the floss under the archwire. Proper use of the floss threaders is shown on the outside of the package. Another product which can be used with braces is superfloss. One end is a floss threader and the other end is the floss. The floss should be moved up and down along the sides of the teeth and under the gumline to remove plaque.

Mouthwashes are good at helping to maintain a clean mouth and are best used one or two times a day after brushing. There are several kinds on the market, some of which dye the plaque a color so that it can be seen and more easily removed.
